Question:

Dear Thank You Diva,

My hair stylist and friend of more than 13 years is moving away. I don't have the eloquent words to express my sincere thanks for all her years of perfect work on my hair as well as how much my friend will be missed. She knows all my deepest darkest secrets.

Thanx so very much for your help,
Nancy

The Thank You Diva responds:

Dear Nancy,

It's a sad day when someone who is part of our lives moves away, and when that person also holds the key to our good looks (and knows our deepest secrets!), then it can be really painful to say goodbye.

You refer to your hair stylist as your friend, and so I assume that you will tell her personally how much you will miss her and how much she has meant to you over the past decade and more. Therefore, my advice would be to choose a gorgeous card and keep you message short, sweet and heartfelt - thereby creating a keepsake that she can read again and again, and perhaps even display. Something that reminds her of you every time she sees it.

Think back to the key moments of your relationship: the first time you met, perhaps, or a particular event she styled your hair for. Maybe you turned to her before an all-important first date, or even for your wedding hair style? What have you particularly laughed about or relied on one another for over the years?

Pick two or three of these key moments and focus on them in your note. As your relationship is close you won't need to write a lot to evoke the good times that you have shared.

Without knowing the details of your relationship, I suggest a note along the following lines:

Dear Krista,

You're leaving and I am desolate! Not only am I losing my fabulous hair stylist who does my hair so perfectly, but I am losing a true friend. For 13 years not only have you been in charge of my hair, but you have also been my great support and my confidant.

Remember the fun we had working together on the community fashion show committee? The time you did my hair before my big meet the parents weekend and produced a bottle of 'medicinal gin' to calm my nerves? And of course the gorgeous wedding hairstyle you created for me.

I will always treasure our friendship and I'll miss you more than I can say.

You have wonderful opportunities ahead of you. I wish you nothing but the very best for your new life in [place].

With friendship and sincere gratitude,
Nancy
